St-Saire

 Code Postal: 76270 - Code INSEE: 76649

Saint-Saire in the heart of the Pays de Bray close to Neufchatel-en-Bray and Forges-les-Eaux is a village to be discovered along the D1314. Covering an area of 1,362 hectares, this village is drained by the Bethune and its tributaries (Sorson, Dambec, Canche ...). Its population in 2012 is close to 650 people. It was only 374 in 1982.
It is likely that the origin of Saint-Saire dates back to Roman or Gallic era. But the existence of Saint-Saire begins with certainty under the episcopate of Salvius (now with the phonetic evolution of language Salve, Saulve, Sauve, Saire, Saint-Saire-en-Bray and St. Saire) from whom the inhabitants get their name: The Saint-Salviens. The church of Saint-Saire has been declared an historical monument since August 2000 and it is certainly the jewel of the town. Built with ferruginous sandstone mined from the surrounding country, this brayonne church is the only one to have a crypt. Do not hesitate to visit.
Did you know? The inventor of the shower is from Saint-Saire. On August 29, 1836 a famous person in the history of Saint-Saire was born. François Merry Delabost, son of Jean Delabost, teacher, and Marie Toussaint is a descendant of one of the oldest families in Saint-Saire. In 1872, Professor François Merry Delabost, physician in charge of the prisons of Rouen, invented the shower so that prisoners could have better hygiene. They were communal showers with individual jets. Very attached to his native village, he had hoped to rest forever in the "modest" cemetery of Saint-Saire.
At the beginning of XXI century, Saint-Saire continues to develop at its own pace for the well-being of its residents and visitors.
St. Saire is village rich in history, a village in the Pays de Bray, a village full of flowers "Flowers 2", a village illuminated at Christmas, a lively village where many events are held. Saint-Saire is worth a visit. "Saint Saire ment yours."

The Church of Saint Saire

The Church of Saint Saire is one of the jewels of the Pays de Bray. Built while ferruginous sandstone of the country whose very clearly the fish bones layouts, it stands proudly at the road junction which is the center of the village. It imposes on the looks of passers-by due to his greatness, of its materials, its bell tower in 'axe '. The Church was built late 11th and early 12th century on a single vaulted crypt in Pays de Bray, built in the place of the primitive sanctuary of Saint Salve - important place of pilgrimage until the 19th century.

The tower serves to before porch and we discover a beautiful Romanesque portal with decorations in broken sticks.

The successive Redistributions have changed the appearance of the building during the 16th, 17th and 19th centuries. In 1866, he is victim of a fire which destroyed the main altar, the framing of the apse of the choir. In August 2000, the Church was included in the supplementary inventory of historical monuments. The Church is open each year to the heritage days and other occasions. When these doors all open objects and vestments are exposed.
